Possible meets.... Craig Simpson of Craig Duncan Hair
Wise beyond his years and incredibly talented to boot, our latest guest seems to have been around the salon and style scene for a long time, despite only recently turning 30. He's an award-winning stylist, a bit of a forward-thinker and now a business owner totally in tune with 21st century ecological concerns, which was a first for the area.
The next time you enjoy a Christmas party night or a local wedding (remember those!) chances are you will be in the company of more than a few people who he has worked his magic on in preparation for their big night.
In our opinion, the Perth area is very blessed to have a talent like him.
This week, Possible meets...... Craig Simpson of Craig Duncan Hair.
Can you tell us a bit about your business?
We are a local new independent salon in Perth. Our ethos of the salon is to be as much of an eco salon as we can. We range from many ways of colours and cuts and are known for being Perth's salon for doing luxury hair extensions in all methods. As our focus on being eco friendly we only sell organic products from Oway and Eleven Australia. All our products are either from recycled plastic or glass bottles. We are also apart of Green salon collective which means that everything that we use or dispose of gets recycled in the best possible way. In saying that, left over colour will then get sent away to help create energy, all types of plastics will get sent away and recycled properly, PPE will get sent away to be recycled, our foil also and the best thing I find is that all hair that has been cut and swept away gets recycled and be used to soak up oil spills in the form of hair mats & hair booms. It will also get used for gardening & composting as well as be used to create wigs for children.
How was 2020 for you professionally and personally?
2020 was just one crazy year. A very long year but a quick one also. Being closed for 5 months out of 12 I was never expecting. When I was able to open the salon back up again I spent 6/7 days a week in the salon to get everyone back in and making our clients feel good about themselves. A completely different way of working than before. I am very grateful to our customers of the salon and it means a lot to us for them to come and see us. People think that salons won’t ever close due to everyone needing their hair done but this is wrong. There’s about 20,000 salons in the uk and 6,000 have already closed due to the pandemic. So we do say to our clients to shop local and help us keep going. We do hope that 2021 will bring a lot more positivity but time will tell.
Tell us about the first time you ever moved out of your family home and rented/bought your first property?
First time I moved out was when I decided to leave my family home and move to the big city of Edinburgh. I rented a flat with the landlord himself. Well I rented a room. The good thing about it was that it was all bills included! So I didn’t need to worry about extra costs of bills. It was a great flat near the shore in Leith and was only 5/10 minute walk to the salon I worked for ( Charlie Millers ) in ocean terminal. Moving out the first time was a major step for me. I thought I knew everything but I clearly didn’t. It actually made me grow up a lot more.
Which parts of Perthshire have you lived in and are there any that you liked the most?
I've actually only lived in 2 areas in Perth. Scone and where I am currently. Just a 10 minute walk from the town centre. I do like where I live just now as I get to walk everywhere. Even if it's to go to the pub/Brewdog I can walk home safely without having to spend £10/£20 to get home in a taxi. I also walk my dog everywhere and I walk to work everyday. Saves money in the long run as well as I don’t need to drive everywhere.
What’s your favourite room in your home and why?
My favourite room would have to be the kitchen. It's the heart of the home. When we were able to have friends round before the pandemic, we would always end up in the kitchen. I loved just getting lost in my cooking after work. It helps me not focus about work and create amazing smells and food. I would love a bigger kitchen in the future
In your opinion, what is it that makes a house a home?
For me what makes a house a home is all your personal touches. Everyone loves a show home and so do I, but nothing shows a home like family photographs, prints on the wall and showcasing where you’ve been around the world. We live our lives in our phones will all our photos in it. But no-one really has photos on display nowadays. A home is a place to relax and feel safe.
Why do you think Perthshire is such a popular location for buyers from all over parts of Scotland and the UK?
Perth is in the centre of everywhere. From Dundee, to Edinburgh, to Glasgow, to Inverness. I would say Perth is a lot cheaper to live in than other cities round about and Perth has a lot of family areas, family owned shops and restaurants. There’s actually not that many chains of businesses in Perth, it's more independent businesess which I think is great.
If you could have your dream home, anywhere in the world, where would it be and tell us a bit about what it might have in it and look like?
It's a dream home that I know I will never get but I'd love to live in Los Angeles. I have never been there but what I’ve seen just looks amazing. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen 'Selling Sunset' on Netflix but the homes on the show are just unbelievable! As long as I had a pool and a cinema room I'll be happy. I love my movies so that would need to be a must!
