Possible meets.... Mel Cousland of Flawless Peach
The purpose of this feature is to shine a light on businesses across the local area and not just the long established ones. Just like ourselves, our guest is starting small and her first 2 years in business have been anything but easy. Through those stop/start, challenging times and also scattered throughout this interview, her passion, positivity and determination have shone through and we’ve no doubt it’s these qualities that will carry her through into a bright and successful career.
This week, Possible meets Mel Cousland of Flawless Peach.
Can you tell us a bit about your business?
Flawless Peach is my beauty therapy business, I started out myself 2 years ago now. Previously I worked in various salons in Perth. I am a fully qualified HNC therapist & have also trained in many other courses to expand on my treatments. Although now I mainly focus on brows & lashes, as these are my biggest passions!! I work from home, where I have a room dedicated to my little pride and joy! I love meeting new people and building my client base. My regular clients who I have had over the years and who have followed me on this journey are the reason I love what I do and I’m so lucky to have them supporting my small business. It’s also so much fun being able to do this from the comfort of my own home, yet still working to a high professional standard! You can find me on Instagram & Facebook under @Flawlesspeachox
How was 2020 for you professionally and personally?
For me 2020 professionally wasn’t good. It was a real struggle. For the first 3 months just before Covid hit I was on the last part of maternity. I was due to go back to work in April, which didn’t happen. I was off work until July when I was finally able to open after lockdown. It was hard mentally and I really didn’t think that I would be able to survive. However when I opened it was great and I was super busy! Thanks to all my amazing clients who came back and supported me through all of this!! I worked July - December and then was forced to close again just after Christmas due to lockdown 2.0.! This time round has been a lot harder. Being one of the unfortunate ones not meeting the criteria for any government help or grants has had a huge impact on this. I can’t wait to be back open again and hopefully this is the last of it. Personally, it’s been okay, still a struggle and hard at times but I have my family, a roof over my head and my good health so yes very lucky compared to some who are less fortunate. Me and my fiancé were due to get married last September but decided to move our wedding due to Covid. This wouldn’t have went ahead anyway but that was hard for us both after almost 2 and a half years planning for the biggest day of our lives for it not to go ahead. It was challenging having to move it and not to be too upset, but it was out of our control. We are now getting married in July, Covid or not and we aren’t letting it stop us this time!! We will be Mr & Mrs Jackson!!
Tell us about the first time you ever moved out of your family home and rented/bought your first property?
I moved out when I was 18 to a flat in scone but that didn’t last long. I only stayed there for about 4 months before I met Kev, my fiancé and slowly moved into his from the day we met and ended up living out of bags for a few months haha. Fast forward 2 years living in his house we decided to move after having our wee boy Arthur, we just needed more living space! We didn’t move far, still in Oakbank just up near the high school and previously stayed near Cherrybank. I love Oakbank, it’s central to everything, great bus routes and can easily walk to town if needed. We have a little shop just 5 minutes away from us so it’s more than handy!
Which parts of Perthshire have you lived in and are there any that you liked the most?
I’ve lived in Kinnoull, Scone briefly and Oakbank. I loved staying at my family home in Kinnoull, with all the woodland around us and the great walks, but I have to say living in Oakbank has to be the place I’ve liked most. It’s so central to everything I could possibly need and it’s got lots of great walks around about to take the dog.
What’s your favourite room in your home and why?
My favourite room would be our kitchen. The real heart of the home, I love to cook & bake and feel so happy cooking scrumptious meals for the household! As my mum would say “happiness is homemade“. I love our big window in the kitchen that looks out onto the fields and mountains, it’s so beautiful to look out onto. Although I can’t say when we moved in the kitchen was the best looking room in the house. Being able to design our own perfect kitchen and colour scheme makes all the hard work worth it!
In your opinion, what is it that makes a house a home?
What makes a house a home to me is who I share it with, my little boy, fiancé and our little dog Dora. To me a little mess and toys scattered everywhere from having fun, fills our house with love, fun & a cosy place to play and be safe with one another. Perfect imperfections, yes we all love a super clean and untouched home but without my family our home wouldn’t be anything.
Why do you think Perthshire is such a popular location for buyers from all over parts of Scotland and the UK?
The location, the countryside, the easy access to the big cities? I think Perth is such a popular location as it’s so central to other big cities, for people that may need to commute to work in Glasgow or Edinburgh perhaps but a little less costly to live in! I do love Perth as a town. It’s small enough to get around in car or even on foot, lots of lovely scenery and not too far from the countryside for stunning views and walks when you might just want to clear your head of the busy life!
If you could have your dream home, anywhere in the world, where would it be and tell us a bit about what it might have in it and look like?
This may be a bit cheesy but I already feel like I have my dream home. When we moved in we didn’t plan of ripping it back to the shell and starting again, but doing this we have got to chose everything from the tiles to the paint and all the decorations for the interior! Which is something I love. I love my home and I’m proud of me and Kev for all that we have done to it in the past year. It didn’t feel like it even had a light at the end of the tunnel for it halfway through the renovations but we got there and it’s memories I’ll keep forever.
