Possible meets..... Martin Crines of Jenson Fisher
He’s built a career on building careers. When he’s not driving a golf ball down a fairway he’s driving recruitment for some of the best known companies (big and small) in our local area and further afield and when he’s not chasing down tennis balls on the court he’s chasing talented individuals and finding them their perfect job. He's also just a thoroughly nice man.
This week, Possible meets.... Martin Crines of Jenson Fisher.
Can you tell us a bit about your business?
Jenson Fisher is a specialist recruitment consultancy and we provide talent management solutions to the Accountancy & Finance, Office Support and Financial Services sectors. We work with some fantastic clients, each with wide ranging interests, from Theatres and Football Clubs to FMCG, Insurance, Accountancy Firms and many, many more.
In summary, our business is driven by relationships and not numbers and we pride ourselves on professionalism, service and delivery. Our team comprises individuals who are absolutely, undisputed experts within their fields and our priority is to place the right person in the right job each and every time. Our discretion, integrity and market insight provides successful results and long-lasting professional relationships.
How was 2020 for you professionally and personally?
Where to start with 2020??! Professionally, we actually had a fantastic Q1 to the calendar year and, of course, no-one would have predicted what was to follow. When we hit the “original” lockdown the recruitment world was placed on pause. We were able, during this time, to implement a new CRM system and also launch our new website which under normal circumstances would have taken us an awful lot longer than it actually did! When the operational wheels started turning again in the Summer we were able to at least attempt to get back to doing what we do best.
On a personal level, working from home alongside home-schooling added a new dynamic to our living conditions but we have been fortunate in that we have all managed to stay safe. My daughters are in Nursery and Primary 2 respectively so thankfully the education side wasn’t too tasking!
Tell us about the first time you ever moved out of your family home and rented/bought your first property?
My first property was a terrific flat in Cherrybank in Perth which was rented through a local lettings agent. The flat had an absolutely massive kitchen and my overriding memory of living there was that I had enough worktop space to learn how to cook!
Which parts of Perthshire have you lived in and are there any that you liked the most?
I grew up in Scone and absolutely loved it there, living in the same house until I was 18 before my parents moved to Perth in Oakbank. The first property that I bought was in the newer houses near SSE which was quickly outgrown when the family expanded! With great help from Gary we were able to move to the Western Edge and subsequently back to Oakbank which is a great location near the schools.
I wouldn’t say that I have a favourite area that I have lived in, each have been great at the various stages of my life.
What’s your favourite room in your home and why?
When we bought our current house we spent a few months renovating the property before moving in. The largest part of the project was definitely turning what was previously a small kitchen, dining room and utility room into a large, open-plan kitchen/living area. This tends to be where most of the buzz occurs in the house. By design there is no TV in that room so it is great to engage with the kids and talk about their days.
For purely selfish reasons, my Piano and Exercise Bike are in the conservatory so by default I spend quite a lot of time in there too!
In your opinion, what is it that makes a house a home?
For me, a house becomes a home as a result of the memories that you create there! Be it first steps or first words, fun barbeques in the garden, bringing the Goldendoodle home for the first time, all of these things add up to become our home environment.
Why do you think Perthshire is such a popular location for buyers from all over parts of Scotland and the UK?
Putting my recruiter hat on for this one, Perth is a great base for commuters to Scotlands cities. Within my own network I know a significant number of people who travel all over the country – Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen – and enjoy the tranquility and small-city feel offered by Perth.
If you could have your dream home, anywhere in the world, where would it be and tell us a bit about what it might have in it and look like?
Being an avid tennis player and golfer, I would be attracted to living in a resort with world class facilities on site!! If anything like this crops up Gary, within the budget, please let me know!
Joking aside, I love Portugal in the Algarve and would love to have a villa in Vilamoura, ideally on the cliffs looking out to the Ocean, with our own private swimming pool.
