Possible meets.... Mitch Hunter of Craigie Knowes
This weeks guest is a busy man and he’s worked hard to get where he is. You might be surprised by just how far his name and sounds have travelled and how long he has been plying his trade for. Together with his fellow business partner and party starter, Max Spittal, their releases can boast support from some of the biggest names in his industry. His passion for his craft has resulted in bookings in many different countries, playing for dancefloors across Europe, major festivals in the UK and many sell-out gigs at the Ice Factory right here in the Fair City. However, all of them have been trumped by his biggest and most important gig earlier this year– fatherhood. And we absolutely know for sure that he will bring some of his best business attributes to the world of parenting too – determination, perseverance and a whole lot of fun.
This week, Possible meets…… Mitch Hunter of Craigie Knowes
Can you tell us a bit about your business?
Craigie Knowes is a record label & DJ duo based in Perth. I do this alongside my friend Max Spittal, we release music in the form of vinyl records as well as making it available on digital & streaming platforms. We run a mix series, put on parties & we also have a monthly radio show on Rinse FM. Our party series is based at La Cheetah club in Glasgow & has been for about 5 years now as has the label. As DJs we spend our time travelling to different countries playing in loud, dark basement clubs more often than not. This is all under the Craigie Knowes name. Recently we have just started a new night at the Ice Factory in Perth called Planet Dance. Writing this seems a bit surreal considering 10 years ago we were putting on free parties in the Malt House at the end of Princes Street. Not sure how we got here but it’s been fun.
How has the last 12 – 18 months been for you professionally and personally throughout the COVID-19 situation?
Professionally it has been difficult, without nightclubs our gigs naturally disappeared & this lasted a lot longer than most of us thought it would. However it has given us time to reset & gather energy into releasing a lot more music & becoming better at what we do. We built our own studio from scratch which was a nice project to take our mind away from what was going on. On a personal level it has been amazing, my wife & I had our first child in March this year & she’s brought us a level of happiness we never knew existed, she’s the best. Max has also bought his first house & is currently renovating it so we both have our hands full at the moment!
Tell us about the first time you ever moved out of your family home and rented/bought your first property?
I moved out at 17 & went to live in Tenerife to teach English to Spanish University students, my flat was a 3 bed apartment & a lovely terracotta colour on the outside. It was actually located on the beach that Take Me Out used to be filmed on. So Fernandos is actually Tenerife, or was for a season or two.
Which parts of Perthshire have you lived in and are there any that you liked the most?
I grew up on Victoria Street & so always frequented the South Inch & Craigie area as a child & still do as an adult, although more so in the Abbotsford pub than hanging around the football pitches in the parks. That’s about to change again I guess with the arrival of my daughter. I’ve also stayed in Tulloch & Balbeggie but Craigie is always where my heart will be. Having grown up in an old house I much prefer the high ceilings, intricate features & stonework to new builds. I think people cared a lot more about how a house was built hundreds of years ago.
What’s your favourite room in your home and why?
Our living room, it’s the biggest room in our house & it’s where the majority of our time is spent. It’s spacious but warm & comfortable at the same time, with a big bay window looking out towards Kinnoull hill & the Tay.
In your opinion, what is it that makes a house a home?
Artwork/pictures & colour for me. Growing up in a family where everyone’s houses included interesting things to look at & we were always encouraged to be ourselves & not to conform. This is what makes a home for me, it’s part of your personality. That and the people you share it with.
Why do you think Perthshire is such a popular location for buyers from all over parts of Scotland and the UK?
It’s a beautiful part of the world, we have good pubs & restaurants as well as lots of outdoor activities available on our doorstep. You definitely get a lot more for your money compared to bigger cities & I think the lifestyle available here is more attractive to a much wider demographic now given the past two years.
If you could have your dream home, anywhere in the world, where would it be and tell us a bit about what it might have in it and look like?
My wife & I love old properties & cottages. I think I would like a detached property at the top of Craigie with uninterrupted views over Perth, it would have high ceilings, a wood burner in the living room, a commercial grade kitchen, roll top bath in our ensuite & a big back garden for my daughter to run around in. Perhaps a sauna as well, that would be nice.
